This Saturday, at 4 PM, the 2015/16 season of Champions League begins for the team of Veszprém and it might be the hardest challenge for each team, especially those who are dreaming of the Final 4 in Cologne. “Építők” are travelling to Poland to play against Wisla Plock which seems an extremely difficult ‘task’ for any of the guest teams.
Live broadcast on Sport1.
We are going to take a look at some interesting statistics thanks to Zoltán Lang.
The team of Veszprém participated in the 1982/83 season of Champions League for the first time. To be exact, in the European Champion Clubs' Cup because Champions League exists from 1993. We got into the eighth final in our first season. It was the same during our participation in European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1986/87 and 1987/88. Later, we succeeded in UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, we reached the highest level in 1992, and one year later we got into the final again but lost.
With the beginning of the CL, we were always among the best teams of Europe, and we were able to be in the top 16 most of the times. However, we unfortunately seemed to fail in the European Cup races after we had qualified into the top 8. We played in the final of CWC in 1996/97 and we lost it. Nevertheless, we managed to gain trophy in the 2007/2008 season.
In the last two seasons, our team has been able to get into the Final 4 in Cologne and earlier - in the rematch system – we also have been in the top 4 of CL: 2001/2002, 2003/2002, and 2005/2006. The team could play with Magdeburg once, but unfortunately they could not defeat them in the end. We managed to get into the final last year, when we ended up in the second place against Barcelona.
The game on Saturday will be our 221st CL game, or 233rd including European Champion Clubs' Cup
We played against Polish teams in the CL 10 times, having 8 victories and 2 defeats. We played with Plock 4 times. In 2002/2003 we won both games against them, while in the eighth final of the 2013/14 season we lost in the away game, but we improved ourselves and qualified. In addition, we faced them in the Sparkassen Cup in 2012 and gained victory again.
Out of the five games against Plock, Gergő Iváncsik played for the most time, while in the other team Adam Wisinewski. Both of them played four times, scoring eight and seven goals. Talking about Gergő Iváncsik, we have to add that if he plays this Saturday, then this will be his 150th CL match.
