Barça went through a big transformation this summer: Xavi Pascual has left after 12 (!) seasons, and he was replaced by Carlos Ortega. Kevin Moller (Flensburg), Aron Palmarsson (Aalborg), Casper Ulrich Mortensen (Hamburg), Jure Dolenec (Limoges), Alex Pascual Garcia (Dinamo Bucharest), Cedric Sorhaindo (Dinamo Bucharest), Mamadou Diocou (Löwen) has also left the club, and Raul Entrerrios has retired. However, Leonel Maciel (Cuenca), Angel Fernandez Perez (Kielce), Ali Zein (Sharjah) and Melvyn Richardson (Montpellier) has joined Barça.
Barça got off to a flying start in the EHF Champions League: in the first round they took the two points from Flensburg (25-21), and in the second they defeated Motor Zaporozhye (36-25).
They are also undefeated in the domestic league too: Carlos Ortega’s side won all three games in ASOBAL Leauge against La Rioja (37-22), Nava (44-34) and Bidasoa Irun (32-26).
Telekom Veszprém lost their first game against Kielce last week. Prior to that they won SEHA League, defeated all three of their opponents in K&H league (Komló, Csurgó and FTC), and they managed to beat the odds against PSG.
The two teams have faced each other 23 times before in the EHF CL: Barça won 16 times, Veszprém won 6 times and one of their battles ended in a draw. The last time Veszprém beat Barça was in 2019, Dejan Manaskov, Petar Nenadic and Kentin Mahé all scored 4 goals that game.
The referees of Wednesday’s game are Vaclav Horacek and Jiri Novotny.
