Tournaments for group C of the Champions League continued at the weekend. MKB-MVM Veszprém has had RK Celje Pivovarna Lasko as guest team in a home game, and as we have already reported in our
previous article, we were able to win in a hard strife in the last but one round which assured our group winning.
The other two clashes of our group were also risky because Vardar Skopje and Rhein-Neckar Löwen struggle for getting the second place.
HC Vardar - Montpellier Agglomeration HB 30:26 (18:13)
Game against Skopje was at Saturday before Veszprém-Celje game so Vardar not only played for the second place but tried to keep its chance for getting the first place. Both teams had a tight struggle in the first half for a while, then Árpád Sterbik’s saves were significant and the Macedonian team’s defence was getting stronger against the weakening French offence. During Vardar’s fast break, mainly Dibirov appeared as the most outstanding player, while in the other squad Gajic and Bonnefond tried to close up. In the second half, the guests’ defence improved but they were not able to score more than goals at the end. 10 minutes before the end, with Dibirov’s goal the team headed with 5 goals, and when Sterbik blocked Gajic’s shoot it was quite obvious that the game is decided.
Scorers:
Vardar: Dibirov 12, Karacic 4, Chipurin és Shishkarev 3-3, Dujshebaev, Lazarov és Toskic 2-2, Gorbok és Stoilov 1-1
Montpellier: Gajic 6, Dolenec és Guigou 4-4, Bonnefond és Simonet 3-3, Borges Dutra Ribeiro és Mackovsek 2-2, Kavticnik és Tej 1-1
Chekhovskie Medvedi - Rhein-Neckar Löwen 26:32 (14:18)
For the Germans, only a victory was acceptable as the guest team of the group’s tailender in the fight with Vardar. This is how the game started and it seemed that for the team of Mannheim the game will be quite easy. Löwen’s aggressive 3-2-1 defence was successful and in the 23th minute the result was 17:10. Although, in the next 20 minutes the game’s drift changed due to the weaknesses of the guests’ fast breaks consequently ‘bears’ scored 3 goals. Then, the German team braced itself up and with the leadership of Bastian Rutschmann, who incredibly substituted Landin, they ended the game with a 5:0 series.
Scorers:
Medvedi: Kovalev 8, Zhitnikov 6, Chernoivanov 4, Dereven 3, Kotov 3, Ostashchenko, Tsarapkin 1-1
Löwen: Ekdahl du Rietz és Schmid 6-6, Sigurmannsson 5, Groetzki és Petersson 4-4, Reinkind 3, Ganshorn 2, Gensheimer és Guardiola Villaplana 1-1

The next round’s matchups:
21.02.2015: RK Celje Pivovarna Lasko - Chekhovskie Medvedi
21.02.2015: Rhein-Neckar Löwen - HC Vardar
22.02.2015: Montpellier Agglomeration HB - MKB-MVM Veszprém
Löwen-Vardar game will be the only risky tournament. It is simple: if the Germans win in the home game, then they will get the group’s second place; if not, then the Macedonian team will.
