January 9, 1977 is a very important date in the history of Veszprém city as men’s handball club has been established, which is still working and has outstanding achievements both on domestic and international ground. This sport enjoyed great popularity back then as Veszprémi Vasas’s women team got into the best class in 1966 and 4 years later, in 1970 known as Bakony Vegyész TC they won the Hungarian Championship as the first rural small-sided team. This success has contributed to the idea of the establishment of a men’s handball team in the city of queens. The sport club was created under the wings of Veszprém Megyei Állami Építőipari Vállalat (VÁÉV) under the name of Veszprémi Építők SE in 1977 and they took over BVTC’s men section because they fell out from NBII.
The founding President was Ferenc Forró, whose responsibility was the supervision of the sport and financial situation as the Deputy Director of Finance of VÁÉV. Party Secretary László Fekete, Deputy Technical Director Jenő Klein, Union Secretary József Schmiedhoffer and KISZ-secretary Imre Pintér have helped him in this job as Members of the Board. Of course, Endre Igaz was also there on the first meeting as the President of the company. (Unfortunately Klein, Fekete and Schmiedhoffer could not celebrate the 40th birthday of the Club because they passed away.) They decided then that they establish a handball club and that team has to be among the best classes. After the founding meeting, on the proposal of László Fekete, they asked Csaba Hajnal to start to build the club professionally.
In the first year they could not win the county championship with the lead of Attila Ungvári. However, after that with the help of Csaba Németh, PE teacher, they got into NBII and after that they won NB I/B in 1981 and got into the first-class with the lead of Szilárd Kiss, where they always win a medal in every season since then. They have 24 gold medals (the first one was in 1985), 9 silver medals and 2 bronze medals. They have 25 gold medals in the Hungarian Cup and they also won their first great trophy in this tournament in 1984. Veszprém is the most successful handball club as for the two tournaments and they also got 3 Super Cup victories.
In the international area, they are also successful. The first great victory was the victory of KEK in 1992, which they repeated in 2008. They played in the finals of the Champions League for 3 times (2002, 2015, 2016), but it is also worth to be mentioned that they were there in the final four in Cologne in the last 3 seasons. They are also playing in the SEHA League from the season 2014/15 and they won both the 2 tournaments in which they have participated.
Thanks to the growing fan base, which was acknowledged as the best European fans, and the international participation they are now playing in the Veszprém Aréna since 2008 instead of Március 15. utcai sports hall.
Enormous amount of excellent players could see these 2 ‘sanctuaries’ as their home court. The still active Gergő Iváncsik played on the most matches, for 640 times, while József Éles scored the most goals, exactly 2548. However, most goals scored on the international cup-match (640 goals) belong to Carlos Perez. He was also selected the most times (4 times) as the best handball player in Hungary. Moreover, 2 of our players were selected as the Champions League top scorers; Kiril Lazarov earned this title once, in 2006, while Momir Ilic was elected twice, in 2014 and 2015.
