The 5th round of VELUX EHF Champions League was organized last weekend. As we
reported, Veszprém gained glorious victory over the team of THW Kiel and still remains on top.
SG Flensburg-Handewitt (GER) - Besiktas Jimnastik Kulubu (TUR) 33:25 (16:14)
The first match of the round was organized last Wednesday in Flensburg which hosted Besiktas. The game must have surprised many fans since the Turkish team came storming out to take an early 1:5 lead against Flensburg mostly thanks to Nemanja Pribak and Ramazan Döne. Anders Eggert, however, started exploiting gaps in the Turkish side’s defense, showing efficiency to convert fast breaks and turn the tide in the closing stages of the first half.
The game appeared to be over as a contest when the German team took a 20:16 lead but the guest team reduced the deficit to 21:20. It turned out to be their last roar, however, as a 7:1 run allowed the home team to finish the game with a victory.
Scorers:
Flensburg: Eggert 10, Jakobsson és Mogensen 4-4, Glandorf, Mahe, Radivojevic és Schmidt 3-3, Toft Hansen 2, Djordjic 1 Besiktas: Döne 7, Pribak 6, Djukic 5, Dacevic 3, Arifoglu, Coban, Demirezen és Rasic 1-1
HC Prvo plinarsko drustvo Zagreb (CRO) - Orlen Wisla Plock (POL) 29:25 (13:13)
Two teams, which suffered serious defeat in the previous round, clashed in the Zagreb Arena in front of 10,000 visitors. Before the game, the question was raised which of the two teams would be able to bounce back better. The guest team took advantage of Zagreb’s bad start (7:10). After Veselin Vujovic asked for break, the team fought themselves back in the game and ended the first half with a draw.
In the second half, the match continued with goals being scored on either side of the court but Zagreb seemed to be more efficient even if Plock kept scoring as well. Eventually the saves of the Croatian goalkeeper Ivic and the goals of Stepancic assured the victory.
Scorers:
Zagreb: Stepancic 8, Obranovic 5, Horvat 4, Kontrec és Pavlovic 3-3, Sebetic és Valcic 2-2, Mihic és Valcic 1-1 Plock: Zelenovic 8, Rocha 6, Ghionea 5, Racotea 2, Nikcevic, Piechowski, Tarabochia és Zhitnikov 1-1
Celje Pivovarna Lasko (SLO) - Paris Saint German Handball (FRA) 30:32 (15:16)
The French team started the match better (2:5); the home team, however, caught up and equalized the game (6:6). Nevertheless, they never were in the lead, even though they were fighting hard during the whole game. In the guest team the back players were especially productive, whereas in Celje the fast wing players were predominating.
Then in the second half, Nikola Karabatic became unstoppable in attack but the home team was striving so that there was still a 1-goal difference. Later, a double-strike of Daniel Narcisse and another goal by Igor Vori basically decided the game. They ended the match with a 2-goal guest victory.
Scorers:
Celje: Ivic 8, Janc és Zvizej 5-5, Kodrin, Malburg Patrianova és Mlakar 3-3, Blagotinsek, Fizuletto és Poteko 1-1 PSG: N. Karabatic 9, Hansen 8, Abalo és Barachet 4-4, L. Karabatic, Narcisse és Vori 2-2, Møllgaard Jensen 1
