Telekom Veszprém started the 2021 TIPPMIX Hungarian Cup final against MOL-Pick Szeged. In the first five minutes, the parties did not start to battle each other right away, and only three goals were scored in a 2:1 partial result. The image of the game was balanced, the standing was only 4:4 in the 8th minute. It was only in the 12th minute, when one team could step away from the other, then Szeged reached a 5:7 lead. Veszprém managed to turn the game around and get a 12:11 lead in the 24th minute. Szeged was trying really hard to break up the game and slow down the attacks of Veszprém, but no matter what, the „Építők” had the lead of 14:12.
Both teams started the game with mistakes, luckily Veszprém could show more good in attack and had a 18:15 lead in the 40th minute. The Hungarian champion guarded the three goal lead, while Cupara made great saves during this time. Twelve minutes before the end, Veszprém had a 21:18 lead. The difference went up to four already, but Szeged fought back and tried to get closer. Telekom did not let it, and won the Hungarian Cup for the 28th time in their history. Final result: Telekom Veszprém – MOL-Pick Szeged 28:26
David Davis: Congratulations to the players and to our Supporters! This is my first Hungarian Cup title, so I cannot be more happy. This is why we came here. A final is like this, a lot can happen. Our defense was great, so was our goalkeeper performance. It is always hard to play against the teams of Juan Carlos Pastor. Congratulations to everyone once again!
Máté Lékai: We expected a final like this. We have met with Szeged twice this season, but those did not have so much at stakes besides prestige. Both teams were fighting and small things decided. We are happy, but we start preparing tomorrow as we have a game on Wednesday already.
Juan Carlos Pastor: Congratulations to Veszprém, and thanks to my players who played this final with an injury. I am proud of my team because they fought until the end. This was probably our best game this season. We tried to prepare to this cup weekend against Kiel in the Champions League. We had some problems in defense and we made mistakes in offense, that is why Veszprém had a two goals advantage. In the second period, the difference grew. We missed penalties and got easy fastbreak goals because we got tired by then. I hope we will not have any more injuries this season. We are ready to compete in the rest of the season. Good luck to Veszprém in the Champions League.
Bence Bánhidi: Congratulations to Veszprém, we played a real final. Only small things decided the fate of the title, we cannot make such mistakes. We fought hard, but from now on we continue our journey.
