Saturday morning, the team of Veszprém is going to be headed to Doha, Qatar where the Super Globe takes place which is considered to be the unofficial World Championship of the handball teams. Currently, there are negotiations concerning the television broadcast, we are going to inform you as soon as possible.
You can check the participants and the schedule of the tournament in our previous article. It is important to add that there is a one-hour difference between the two countries, which means that our team is going to play the quarter final against the Brazilian Esporte Clube Taubaté at noon, on Monday according to Hungarian time. If everything happens as planned, the semi-final, where our boys will try hard to get into, will take place at 7 PM, on Tuesday, and the final also on Thursday.
The first Super Globe was organized in 1997 in Vienna and the Spanish CB Cantabria gained triumph. However, it was not until 2002 that the next tournament was organized in Doha and Al-Sadd won at the end against Magdeburg which had defeated Veszprém in CL final. Then, after a couple of years, Cairo became the next venue in 2007 and Ciudad Real won at the end. After another break, the capital of Qatar ended up being the host again in 2010 and has remained ever since. Ciudad won in 2010, THW Kiel in 2011, Atlético Madrid in 2012 and FC Barcelona in the last two years. Veszprém aims at ending this series of victory as the first Hungarian participant in this tournament.
Our first opponent team in the knockout system is the Brazilian Esporte Clube Taubate which has qualified into this tournament for the third time in a row thanks to their victory in the Pan-American Handball Championship. Their coach, Marcus Tata is expecting an extremely hard game against our squad and thinks that our team has a great offensive force and strong players. According to him, Veszprém is currently the best handball team in the world but they are going to do their best in the hope of winning. He wants the players to have a tight first half-time and the final result to be determined in the second half-time. He thinks that their preparation period had been going well, although they lost one of their key players, Henrique Teixeira who unexpectedly signed to the Spanish Granollers a few weeks ago.
Taubaté made the following video for the fans awaiting the Super Globe:
Finally, here are some interesting facts with regard to our team. For Andreas Nilsson, this Super Globe quarter final might be the 50th game in Veszprém; for Renato Sulic, the semi-final can be the 250th; while for Mirko Alilovic, the qualifying game of the last day might be the 150th match in Veszprém jersey.
