Season Summary – Hungarian Cup

In the upcoming weeks we will look back on Telekom Veszprém's 2016/17 performance in each tournaments in a form of an article. In this first article we will look back on the Hungarian Cup.

 

 

The Hungarian Cup Final Four was held yet again in Debrecen on the 14th and 15th of April. According to the fixtures Telekom Veszprém played against Csurgói KK in the semi-final on Saturday. The first period started off tight but Veszprém went into the locker room with a 4 goals lead by the end of the half. That lead was enough for the end and it even grew to a 33:23 win. Top scorer from our team was Blagotinsek who scored 8 goals and was unstoppable for the opposition.

 

 

MOL-Pick Szeged faced us in the final after defeating Grundfos Tatabánya in the semi-final. In the first period Veszprém played dominantly and took a 12:6 lead but by the end of the half we only had a 4 goals lead again. In the second period Szeged climbed back with the help of an amazing goalkeeper performance and they even managed to take the lead at the 48th minute. From that moment on the two parties were side by side. At the 58th minute Szeged was attacking in a double powerplay but Alilovic saved the shot of Kallman while Lékai scored a huge goal on the other side of the court getting the advantage to Veszprém. After the timeout of Szeged Alilovic saved the shot of Kallman again, but this time Lékai failed to score from the counter attack as well. A few second before the final buzzer Balogh Zsolt equalized the score but on the counter attack Matej Gaber fouled Nilsson in the middle of the court which resulted in a red card and a penalty. Palmarsson scored on the overtime penalty thus securing Veszprém's 26th Hungarian Cup title (23:22). Gasper Marguc was voted MVP of the tournament, who was the top scorer of the team in the final with 7 goals.
