Season Summary: Champions League

In our third season summary article, we will look back at the Champions League.

Telekom Veszprém started the 2017/18 CL season in a very tough Group A against Celje. The 8 goals win that time was a great sign for the season to come, but unfortunately the big expectations have fallen short around November, when PSG beat us back-to-back and Danish champions Aalborg defeated us at their home. Naturally, good result came before that, like winning against Flensburg and Kiel at home, while clinching important points against Kielce on the road. After the loss in Aalborg, we managed to climb out of the pit with a victory over Kielce in Veszprém, closing the Champions League right for 2017. In February we started with a defeat against Kiel in Germany. The last 3 games of the group phase was great. We won against Brest, draw against Flensburg in away and won against Celje at home. By collecting 18 points, we finished on the second spot in the group with Flensburg behind us having the same amount of points.

In the eight final, we faced the Danish runner-up Skjern, who were the top team in Group C, and qualified for the best 16 teams by knocking out Motor Zaporozhye. The first game was held in Denmark, and for much surprise, the Hungarian record champion got defeated heavily. The result was a 32:25 loss, with Gasper Marguc scoring 6 goals. For the second leg the team and Supporters prepared heavily, but despite every effort, the team did not manage to turn the game around (34:29) and could not qualify for the quarterfinals. This way we did not manage fulfill the dream of going to the Final4 five times in a row.
