Season end recap: Hungarian Championship

Let us take a look at our achievements in the Hungarian Championship. MKB-MVM Veszprém – due to SEHA League – joined the tournament only in the play-off, gained triumph and defeated the big rival MOL-Pick Szeged twice.

 

 

Veszprém joined the most important national tournament at the end of February when the play-off started. We played our first game at home against Orosháza and won confidently (35:17).

 

A total of six teams played round game in the play-off, each team played a home as well as an away game. You can check the final results here.

 

Veszprém and Szeged fought for the first place. First, on April 4 the team from Bakony hosted its rival, with whom they had not met since Super Cup, and won (29:24) largely thanks to the goals of Zeitz (10) and Ilic (11).

 

 

The stake of the rematch which took place in the last round of the play-off was the final home court advantage. In order to gain this, Szeged needed a 6-goal victory. But the guest team won (25:31) near Tisza-part largely thanks to Roland Mikler’s brilliant saves and the defensive wall.

 

Because of our great performance in the play-off, we could start the finals against MOL-Pick Szeged in Veszprém Arena. Szeged had a good start and a 3-goal difference in the first half.

However, Veszprém surmounted Szeged around the 45-50th minute and gained a 6-goal triumph (29:23) led by László Nagy who scored 9 goals.

 

Before the rematch in Szeged, the team of “Tisza-part” took a vow to defeat Veszprém at least once in the season and make the final series a 3-game round. They were not able to make it real, the scoreboard showed 10:17 in the first half. Momir Ilic seemed unstoppable and scored 14 goals; the game finally ended with 29:31. The last seconds of the game were especially memorable thanks to László Nagy letting the retiring captain of MOL-Pick Szeged Attila Vadkerti say goodbye with a goal on home court. Then, celebration began with the fans of “Építők”. The team of Veszprém gained its 23rd championship gold medal on May 19, 2015.
