2019. Jun. 27. Thursday, 20:11
Today at 6:00 p.m., the European Handball Federation (EHF) has drawn the group phase of the 2019/20 VELUX EHF Champions League season. Telekom Veszprém will go into battle against Vardar, Kielce, Brest, Motor, Montpellier, Porto and Kiel. We asked the reaction of our head coach, sports director and players about the opponents after the draw.
David Davis: I think there is no group of death, like there was last season. The stronger teams of last year got into our group, but overall I think it was a well-balanced draw. We will see who will be the stronger opponents, but we have some experienced teams in the group that nobody should underestimate. Of course, the goal is to get the first position in the group, because a team like Veszprém always has to fight for the top spot.

László Nagy: I was not surprised because ever since I was in Veszprém, we were always in the toughest group, and although it may seem scary at first, it has a huge advantage too. Hopefully, these games will put the team in form as soon as possible. If we can win our home games, and aspire to bring as many points as possible from away games, then our goal can be reached. Every point will have a huge matter. I am for sure, that the fall season will be about surviving. The team will be rebuilt, of course, I am not trying to find excuses but everyone has to be clear with that. We have to count on ourselves first.

Máté Lékai: I think we are in a tough group once again. You cannot get into an easy group anyway since the seeding method in the Champions League. I would not have mind getting Celje from the last pot. We knew that we are going to avoid Barca because of the pot division. Veszprém’s goal cannot be anything else than finishing on top position. If I am not mistaken, since I play in Veszprém, we could only finis hon second position. I hope that we can do it this year. Although we will face two Final4 opponents, we consider last year’s Final4 closed with the team. As soon as preseason starts, we will open a new chapter and only focus on the future.

Rasmus Lauge Schmidt: It looks difficult. I think this is a difficult group with some really huge teams. It is always difficult, when you are playing these kind of games. I think we will be in battle for the top two positions with Kielce, Vardar and Kiel. This is my guess. We may lose some points there but the battle for the top spot will be between these teams.
