Péter Gulyás: 500 matches with Veszprém

In the SEHA League game against Borac Banja Luka, our right wing Péter Gulyás played his 500th game in Veszprém jersey. On behalf of the Club, Sándor Polyák board member welcomed him with a number 500 jersey before the first blast.

 

 

Our current squad’s co-captain was born in Veszprém, on March 4, 1984 and also raised there. He has been signed to Veszprém Handball Club since 1997. Going through the youth teams, he finally became an adult player here. He debuted on March 7, 2001 in the first team – the former name of which is Fotex KVC – in the away Hungarian championship game against Tiszaföldvár (17:31) and thanked Coach Zdravko Zovko’s trust with a goal. In his last game he scored five goals.

 

Only five other players had more games than him in Veszprém: István Csoknyai 601, Gergő Iváncsik 593, Perez Carlos 584, István Pásztor 551 and János Gyurka 502. This means that “Gulyi” can get into the 5th place in the team’s all-time list this month.

 

During the past period, our national team’s right wing has won the Hungarian Championship 13 times, Hungarian Cup 11 times, Cup Winners’ Cup once; and took part in Champions League Final Four. He has scored a total of 1229 goals in Veszprém jersey. Besides, he played in the Hungarian national team 80 times, with which the biggest success was the 4th place in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

It’s a very big number. I haven’t thought that I could reach this game number in Veszprém jersey.

 

Absolutely. I didn’t expect it at all. It felt amazing, I was really happy.

 

It was great. I was very nervous but it was a huge thing. Coach Zovko sent me to the court only in the first half and I could score right before I was subsituted.

 

 

Fortunately, I have some. The biggest victories are obviously among them but in Veszprém each game has a value. Getting into last year’s Final Four and celebrating after that remains an everlasting memory. It was an incredible feeling and I will never forget that the players of Paris gazed our triumph. I must highlight the Cup Winners’ Cup victory and the game where we headed with 12-13 goals on domestic field against Barcelona. The first full house game in Veszprém Arena is also unforgettable after we came over from the small arena, while the victory after Marian Cozma’s death was a truly special memory. Recalling good old times, I remember the rematch against Montpellier in the Sport Arena of Március 15 Street when we ran though the fans’ flags at the introduction, moreover the arena was full during the warm-up. Although, if I had to highlight one moment it would be my first full house game in our old stadium, when I played the Championship final with Saracevic and co. against the all-time rival Szeged.

 

 

First of all, I would mention Mrs. Róbert Nagy, who is still working with Veszprém’s youth teams. When I was in the 5-6th grade in György Dózsa Elementary School, I was a bit hesitating between swimming and handball but she helped me to decide and finally I chose handball. I’d like to highlight Jr. Szilárd Kiss who signed me to Veszprém, and Zdravko Zovko who got me into the first team in July 2000 after having won the high school championship. But beside them, I’m very grateful to my other coaches, my teammates and also our fans. I’m really proud of being able to play with the best players of the world in such an amazing atmosphere.

 

I will not have another 500 games for sure but I still want to play a lot.
