From 1 July René Toft Hansen is officially a player of Telekom Veszprém. We asked the Olympic champion Danish line player about his move to his new home.
You are now officially the player of Telekom Veszprém. Are you excited for the season ahead of us?
I am very excited. I have played in Kiel for 6 years and I was ready to try something new, a new team, a new country and new goals. I think Veszprém is the perfect Club for me. I have played here a lot of times and I am excited about the Arena because it is amazing how the Supporters motivate the team. I am looking forward playing for Veszprém and hopefully we can achieve our goals together like winning the Championship and the Champions League.
How did you see your last season in Kiel?
I am not satisfied with my last season, as we have only finished fifth in the Bundesliga. I was injured in the last games, and hoped that I could play in the Sparkassen Arena. Unfortunately, I was not able to do so. So of course, I am not satisfied with my last season because I wanted to play. All in all my 6 years is Kiel was wonderful, we won the championship a lot of time and the arena was outstanding. I want to play and that is why I came here. The toughness of the Hungarian league is not that similar to the German league, so I hope I can carry on playing on the court and not as a spectator from the stands.
How was your farewell from your last team?
We had our last game against Stuttgart, and I hoped that I could play to say proper goodbye to the fans. After the game, I said farewell in the arena as it is a tradition for the leaving players. It was hard but it was time to leave. I hope that one day I will go back and play a last game there with Veszprém in the Champions League.
How is the moving to your new home?
I moved in 1 July, I am looking forward to it very much. I have seen my house, the country, Balaton and Veszprém. I like it very much, everything is very green. I moved in one month before the start of the preparation so I can discover my surroundings, like where to go to the doctor or where to go shopping. I would like to discover the city, and I hope for good weather. It will be like a mini vacation. We will have a lot of family visiting us, to see our new homes.
You are moving here with your family, will they like the new environment? What do you think?
I hope. It will be new. The only thing I was scared about before my move was that my daughter would not fit in kindergarten. She does not speak Hungarian and only understand a little bit of English. She speaks Danish and German, so it could be difficult to go through kindergarten. I hope it will function well and my family will be happy. If they are happy than I am happy.
What are your first impressions of Hungary?
It is very green and warm here. Everyone I met was very kind and I am looking forward to come here and explore the land.
The team goes to training camp at the end of July and then plays a lot of preparation games. What do you expect from those matches?
First of all, I hope that I will be fit and take part in the games fully. I think it will be hard, and also for me, now that everything will be in English and not German. I have to get into speaking English again. It is always difficult to come to a new team because you have to learn new tactics. It takes time. It will be a tough preparation but I think it was time to try something new. I am looking forward to learning new things.
What would you like to achieve with the team in the next season?
I want to win everything. The championship, the cup and the Champions League. I could not do that with Kiel, even though I was in Final4 with them 4 times. Veszprém could not win it also, so now I hope that we can do it together. I hope will play better and better through the season as a team.
