Interview with René Toft Hansen

It became official yesterday that René Toft Hansen will continue his career in Telekom Veszprém from 1 July 2018. You can read our chat with the world-class Danish line player and defense specialist below.

You are moving to Veszprém in the summer of 2018. Why did you chose to join the Hungarian record champion?

I am very happy about my move to Veszprém. I played 6 years in Kiel and it was exciting to play here but every time we played in Veszprém, the atmosphere was unbelievable. I liked to play there. I think we have the same goals, the team and I. I do not have a Champions League title and Veszprém would also like to win the series. This was the deciding factor for me to move to Veszprém.

You played in Veszprém as a guest many times. How do you look back at those games, what kind of memories do you have about them?

Every time we had a close match with only few goals between at the end. I have played a lot of matches there and I really like the atmosphere there. It was amazing when the spectators are singing and making a great atmosphere. That is what I can remember. I would like to get this at my home court. There are 2 Arenas with a great ambiance, one in Kiel and in the Veszprém Arena. I liked to play there every time.

What do you think, how can you be a help for the team?

I changed clubs for professional reasons. I had a great talk with Ljubomir Vranjes and I like his ideas and goals for the next season. I hope I can join a good team and help them to get to the top of the Champions League and the Hungarian league as well.

You won a lot of trophies with your Clubs and with your national team as well. What is your proudest moment looking back at your career?

My favorite memory is the Olympic gold medal for the Danish national team. It was with my country and my brother. I was injured before the Olympics with my knee and did not even know if I can make it to the final roster. I made it and we won the gold medal. It was unbelievable for me, and I am very happy about the gold medal.

Is there a future teammate with whom you have known each other previously? Like Momir Ilic with whom you played toghether in Kiel. Did you speak to anyone from Veszprém before you made your decision?

I have only talked to Ljubomir Vranjes but I know Momir Ilic very well. I played with him in Kiel and I am looking forward to play with him again. He is a great player. I did not talk to other players in the team.

How would you describe yourself as a person outside of handball? What do you like to do in your free time? Maybe a few words about your family?

I like to spend time with my family. I have a 3 years old daughter. I will have another daughter in 3 weeks. I spend a lot of time with my family, almost every free time I have, it is very important for me. This is also, why I moved to Veszprém, because there is fewer traveling days and days in Hotels in Hungary, not like in Germany, where we have spent a lot of time in the bus and hotels. This way I can have more time with my family.

For closing, what is your message to the Supporters of Veszprém?

I am looking forward to fight with the fans to win games and to get to the top of Europe by winning the Champions League.
