It became official today that Rasmus Lauge Schmidt will continue his career in Telekom Veszprém from 1 July 2019. Below you can read our interview with the great Danish left back.
You will be the player of Telekom Veszprém from 1 July 2019. Why did you decide to change clubs and why did you chose Veszprém?
It is a good question but also easy to answer. Veszprém is a great club with big ambitions. They are going all in to win the Champion League. You do not have so long journeys in the Hungarian league, that way I can take a bit more care of my body. It is important because I had two big injuries in my career and that way I can take care of myself. The Bundesliga is hard and we have long travels. It is an advantage in Veszprém that I can prepare better and hopefully play handball as long as possible.
Before your decision did you talk to anyone from Veszprém or anyone who played here before?
I talked to coach Vranjes of course. He told me good things about the club. With those ambitions that Veszprém has it is difficult to say no. It will be a big step for my family, to take a journey away from almost home, from Flensburg. We are ready and I am ready to give everything. I heard a lot about Veszprém, a lot of positive things. They have a great team. They can compete in the Champions League every year and I will do my best to bring titles back to Veszprém.
Although you only join the Club more than one year from now but how do you see your role in the team? What do you think, how can you help the team?
It is one and a half year, a lot can happen, I do not know how the team will turn out to be. We will see, I do not know what role I would get. No matter what I will try to play my part the best way possible. The role Ljubo wants me to play. If it is on the bench or on the court, I will do my part the best I can.
In the recent times, you played here a few times. What do you think about those games and the Arena?
Great atmosphere. It is very difficult to play in the Veszprém Arena. I am looking forward to call them my home fans.
What is the proudest moment of your career so far?
I think was to win the European championship with Denmark in Serbia. That was the biggest thing. I could win the Bundesliga, which was also a big thing. I hope I can also bring some trophies to Flensburg before I leave this Club. We will see what happens.
Please talk a little bit about yourself. How would you describe yourself on and off the court? Family maybe? Any hobbies?
On the court, I will break my arm to win, every time. I give everything to win when I am on the court. That is the best way to describe myself. Sometimes I want to win so badly. In person, I am a quiet guy. I like to sit down and relax. I love my family, I am a family person. I have a wife and a little daughter now. They are the biggest thing in my life. I would do anything for them. I like playing golf as a hobby.
What is your message to the Veszprém fans?
I am looking forward to play in Veszprém very much in one and a half year. I am looking forward to step into the Arena and to have them as my home fans. I will do anything to win for them.
