Our Club announced in this March that signed a 4-year deal with the very talented playmaker Mátyás Győri. We had a conversation with the 20 years old Hungarian international player.
Welcome to Veszprém now that you are officially the member of the team since 1st of July. Please tell us how did this process started for you to become a player of Veszprém.
First of all I am very happy that I am here and that my contract started officially. It was very easy. Fortunately I played well in the beginning of the season and I kept on going strong in the season. As I remember sometime in December Veszprém reached out to me. At first I was pretty unconfident and I had to think about it for a while because it was a big decision. After our new coach said personally that he needs me and it was confirmed by the management it was very easy. I decided quickly.
Although you are young there is a long way to be a player for Veszprém. How did you become a handball player?
I did not play for a lot of teams. Balatonfüred was my second club, before that I played in Békés. I would not say that I am a huge traveler. I started playing in Szeghalom, but it was not so serious, only a hobby with sponge balls. After that I played in Békés in the second division for 5 years. After that I played 4 years in Balatonfüred where I went when I was 16. Now I am here in Veszprém.
How is your summer going so far?
I had one week off and ever since I am preparing with the U20 National Team and playing training matches.
You played in the adult Hungarian National Team as well and scored 10 goals against Netherland. How do you see the performance of the National Team and how do you see this team getting younger and younger?
I think it is a great team. I do not think that there could be a player who think otherwise. The atmosphere is really good. When I first got there around October or November everybody was very helpful and there were no problems at all. I can still say the same after all these months, I feel great. This qualifying series went well, we only lost to Denmark there and we had a draw against them at home. Besides that we won games and it was a great series.
You were announced in the spring among other players and the new head coach. You chose 22 as your jersey number. Are there any reasons that you chose this number?
Yes I was born on the 2nd of February. I played in that number for a long time, either that or 2 but I chose this for now.
At the press conference, sitting next to the new players you might started to think about the team of Telekom Veszprém for the next season. What do you think Telekom Veszprém will be in the season 2017/2018?
I cannot really say that for now. Everything is given to get good results next season, the players are great and we have a good coach to hold it all together. Everything is given.
If you have to describe yourself as a player what would you say? What are your strong points?
Well I am not the tallest or strongest player and I am not that player who jumps up from 12 meters and scores a huge goal. My offense relies on my dribbling, mainly 1on1 situations. In defense I try to gain space and close the player out because if someone can gain momentum against me they will just run through me. (Laughs)
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I rest, mostly sleep because I play handball for a living and I have to be rested. I do not really have a hobby, I either play handball or sleep, or train.
Final question: what is your message to the supporters?
I am really looking forward to play in front of them. There were probably a lot of Veszprém supporters on the stands in our last national team game against Netherland and it was an incredible feeling because it was the biggest crowd that ever cheered for me. I would like to thank them for that experience and I would like to thank them in advance for supporting me in the future.
