Interview with Máté Lékai

 

Telekom Veszprém is currently in training camp in The Netherlands, in Sittard, where the boys started preparations to the next season with Máté Lékai in the squad. We asked the Hungarian international, who just returned from a nasty hand injury, about the summer, some football and of course the preparations and the next season.

 

 

My summer was spent nicely, I went on vacation with my family and with my fiancé also. I spent a lot of time resting, and of course, training camp never feels good. (laughs) I am sure that we will survive though.

 

I played in the World Championship qualifiers, although my thumb was not even close to 100%. I still wear a tape on my hand. We will see how it works during the preparations. I hope there will be no problems with it.

 

I thought they had a lot of great players and finally they can take the next step. I think they deserved it. Respect to Croatia, because they did a huge thing despite being a small country, but they could not win any games in full time, while France beat Belgium, Argentina and Croatia confidently. The French title is well deserved.

 

This is a strange question because I do not really like him personally as a human. I think he is one of the best players in the world and he is a huge signing for Juventus. The plain fact that Juve could sign a player like Ronaldo is a huge thing. I hope he will play like he did before and maybe I will get to like him personally as well.

 

The training camp is tough, yesterday morning we had a “light” gym training, and light is in big parenthesis. This will get even tougher. We will slowly start running next to a lot of gym sessions. After this we will train handball but it is not the same as it is during the year. We will work very hard this week.

 

The best is that we are together with the boys again, and we are sharing stories about the summer and making jokes. The toughest is that we put ourselves in robot mode. We sleep, eat, train and work hard. This part is not really liked by much players, but it is also a very important part of sport.

My worst quality is that I leave a mess in the room a lot of times. The best is that I sleep a lot, so I cannot bother my roommate a lot. (laughs)

 

How will they integrate on court is still unknown, we are not in that phase in the preparations yet. I think off court, everyone can integrate well, we are a good bunch, and we are open, and also the new arrivals are a great group of guys, so I do not think that their integration will be a problem.

 

I expect to finish those games without injuries.

 

A better result at the end than last year. We would like to reclaim the Hungarian championship title, and to defend our Cup title. Naturally, the aim of Veszprém is to win the Champions League, but it is very far still. We are in the first day of preparations, we have to continue step by step. I am sure that we will play better in the next season, and everyone will perform better, me too personally, so we can reach our goals!

 

It is an interesting question because the football and handball CL league final is always very close to each other. They are almost on the same weekend, so I hope that both teams will be busy that weekend. (laughs)
