We asked our captain about the European championship, our awarded players and the rest of the season ahead of us.
How do you feel yourself? How did you spend the holidays? Could you rest out the tiredness of the first half of the season?
Thank you for your question, the holidays went well, with family. Of course sport could not be missing regardless that we did not practice with the team as most of them are with their national teams. I did some running and conditioning exercises. The fall season is now behind us and we are waiting for the spring with renewed power.
How do you feel watching the Hungarian national team from the outside now that you are not among them?
I can feel it physically because I have more time for myself and for watching my physical shape. It is good from that point of view. It is hopeful that we have 3 players in right back position who are the future of the team for a long shot and let’s not forget that we are starting an Olympic cycle. Coach Vranjes can practice with new coach, new players and new system here in the EURO and for the time to come, in order to participate in the Olympic Games.
How did you see the first game against Denmark, and what are you expectations against Spain and the Czech Republic?
It would have been good to start the European championship with a win but this defeat was in the game. I am happy that we could hold ourselves against the Olympic champions for one-half. After the 40th minute we got softer a bit and the game was about to be lost, so those players who had less opportunity could join the tournament and could get a glimpse of what this is all about. I am sure it will help their development. Spain will be a tough opponent. I think they play dynamic handball, which we have to filter well. Besides this, we have to minimize turnovers. If we can do this, I think we can be an equal opponent to them for more than 40 minutes. I expect a close battle, but for that we have to have an outstanding performance not from only one player but all. Against the Czech, we have to win to advance and the boys know this as well. We cannot blame anything on fatigue. I do not say we have to beat them without a problem but with confidence.
The Hungarian Handball Federation selected the 23rd Veszprém player for the Player of the Year award, from which you have 3 already, but now Máté Lékai won. What do you think about Máté’s year?
I think it is undeniable because he had a great season and he showed this fall what he could do. He is a goalscorer and moves the team well. His first place in without doubt. I hope that he will continue like this in the EURO and in spring as well.
You bagged an award yourself, as you have been named as best defender. Has your defense been awarded like that?
No nothing like this ever happened. I have been awarded but not for my defense. I guess everything has to start somewhere. (Laughs) I am happy that those who voted acknowledge my performance.
Further awarded players were Roland Mikler as best goalkeeper, Gasper Marguc as best foreign player, Győri Mátyás as best U23 player and the currently on loan at Balatonfüred, Zoltán Szita as best U20 player. As Captain, what does their success mean to you? Please summarize it in a few words.
Their performance is without doubt. Roli had great games last year; Gasi is a top scorer and confident winger so I think that his award is well deserved too. About the youngsters, I can confidently say that they are the future of the national team. Zoli is currently on loan, which is good for him because he can improve at the first division, which will benefit him for good.
How was training with the boys again today?
We were not complete. First I would like to wish every Veszprém player in the EURO an injury-less and successful competition. We were really happy for each other with those who are here in Veszprém because we have not seen each other for over a month. We started with a gym session in great atmosphere. We are waiting for our mates to come back but for now we have to get ourselves in shape because I am sure that those who participate in the European championship will be tired, and it is completely normal. For us who are here will have to endure bigger pressure for a few weeks.
What are your expectations for the rest of the season?
I expect injury-less and successful period. We would like to enjoy the support of our fans but we know that the team has to play well. Our spring will not be easy, it never was but we are trying to improve step by step, game by game to achieve better performance.
