Our team’s legendary playmaker István Gulyás has been working as a coach in our youth system. But Ljubomir Vranjes head coach and his assistant Björn Sätherström were dismissed from their work on Monday and then the onetime great playmaker became the interim head coach. His work is helped by an another icon of Veszprém Carlos Perez. They prepare the “Építők” for the upcoming Champions League game at the home of Meshkov Brest. We were talking with coach István Gulyás after the last training before the travel.
How did you see the current condition of the team? What were your feelings after the last training before the travel?
I think we closed a quite positive day today. It started a little bit sleepy but the team woke up for the main part of the training. We could work well. We could talk about some important things and during the video analysis session we paid attention on what we can expect in the weekend. I am positive however I always think in a positive way. We are on a good way.
What did you say at first after taking over the team in the beginning of the week?
In the beginning, I said nothing. I smelled into the atmosphere of the locker room and I felt immediately what the situation is. I decided in that moment that I had to make a training, which is absolutely different than they used to. We made a work that bounced them out of the situation they were in. That was my goal. Moreover that was my goal all week long.
What kind of work have you done this week, what did you focus on?
We did physical work in the beginning of the week. The important thing was to work and sweat. I told this today to the guys as well. Also the aim is to make everyone have an important part in the training, so it does not matter who plays on Saturday, they will know that after 1 comes 2 and never 3. This is very important in this week’s work, that everyone should feel that he is the part of the team and has to do something about this case.
The team currently has 2 losses and a victory, which means that it would be important to come back with 2 points from Belarus. It does not seem easy. What is your opinion about Meshkov Brest? How would you describe their game?
Brest is a dangerous court. They are very fast and they have 2 victories which can give them a lot of confidence and they will put us under huge pressure in the beginning of the match. We have to know that this pressure will fade as we come close to the end and they do not have a big bench. We have to be prepared for the pressure period to survive and to give them some answers.
In what would you like to see a difference compared to our previous Champions League games?
This is a difficult question. We will try to lead shorter offensive plays to make things clearer. If there is a chance, shoot the ball and play towards the net. We have to be quicker and we have to arrive to our places in time. The important thing is to occupy the strategic points in offense quicker than the opponent does. If we turn it around, we have to occupy strategic points in defense faster than the opponent does. These are very important things and also part of the game. We can see that a lot of times a team is just travelling after the other. They are there and try to block but it is too late. It is important who will occupy those positions where the shot comes or can come. This defies everything.
