It became official today that Borut Mackovsek will continue his career in Veszprém. Here is our first interview with the Slovenian left back.
You are moving to Veszprém in the summer of 2018. Why did you chose to join the Hungarian record champion?
I think that everyone would like to come and play in Veszprém. It is one of the best clubs in Europe and when you have a chance to come here, I think, nobody would want to miss it.
You played in Veszprém as a guest many times. How do you look back at those games, what kind of memories do you have about them?
I have great memories because the atmosphere here in the Veszprém Arena is always good. It is always full. People in Veszprém love handball in general and I think this is great. We lost almost every time we played here but the memories are nice, because the fans were great.
What do you think, how can you be a help for your new team? What do you consider your biggest strength?
I will give my best, just as I did in Celje. Of course I will give my maximum in every game. I would like to make progress here working with coach Ljubo and winning the Champions League would be a dream come true.
What is your proudest moment looking back at your career?
I think it was when my daughter was born, and the other one was winning bronze medal in the 2017 World Championship with Slovenia. It was my biggest achievement.
Is there a future teammate with whom you have known each other previously? Did you speak to anyone from Veszprém before you made your decision?
I spoke with Gasper Marguc and Blaz Blagotinsek, they knew that we were talking with Veszprém. They said that they are happy here and that it is a good team, and the people in Veszprém are also nice. It is not so far from Celje, so when you have free time you can go home. It was not a hard decision for me.
You have faced many of your future teammates in the World Championship qualifiers. What do you think about those games?
We knew that it will be hard and yesterday we played well but lost by 2 goals at the end. We made the mistake in Koper. We thought it will be a little bit easier but this Hungarian team is very good. Half of it is from Veszprém and the other half is from Szeged. They were simply better. We lost this qualifier in Koper but that is sport. They were better. That is it.
You will play in number 51 in Veszprém just like in Celje. Why is it your jersey number?
Because my father was born in 1951 and passed away when I was young.
How would you describe yourself as a person outside of handball? What do you like to do in your free time? Maybe a few words about your family?
I can say that I am a family guy but I also like to be alone. Sometimes I enjoy sitting and drinking coffee by myself. When we have free time, I spend time with my daughter and my girlfriend. My daughter will be 4 years old this September and she will go to kindergarten here in Veszprém. I also like movies a lot, and video games.
For closing, what is your message to the Supporters of Veszprém?
I will give my best and I hope that they will accept me nicely. I would like to impress them with my style of play.
