Aron Pálmarsson, our new playmaker-left back has arrived to Veszprém from Iceland. We made an interview with him.
Aron, welcome to Veszpém.
Thanks you very much! I’m happy to be here.
What are your first impressions of the town and the neighbourhood so far?
The weather is too hot for an Icelander (laughing). I’ve been here for three-four times. I like the neighbourhood, Veszprém as well as Lake Balaton. I can’t wait to live here.
How was your last season in Kiel?
I think it went good since we won the German Championship which is always one of the main goals. However, I’m not satisfied with the final result of the Champions League. I think one trophy can be enough in Kiel, if it’s a Championship victory but in such a strong team, you want more.
Why did you leave your team, and why did you choose Veszprém?
I wanted to try something new, I didn’t want to stay in Germany and Veszprém showed big interest. I talked to my agent; I wanted to come here because this Club seems to be more successful year by year. Then, I talked to the managers of Veszprém who convinced me. They told me about their main aims, like the victory of the Champions League; they will strive as much as possible. Then, we made an arrangement.
Have you talked to any of your former or current teammates before signing the contract?
Yes, I’ve talked to Momir, who’d been here for a year, and I also consulted a lot with Marko Vujin. Momo said that it’s great to be here and Marko also praised the team and the life here. He said that the period he spent here was one of the greatest periods of his life and I will not regret it. So I’ve talked a lot about it because they are very good friends of mine and I took their opinion into consideration.
You played against Veszprém many times. What are your memories of these games, especially the last one?
Well, Kiel was defeated by Veszprém last time. I like the Spanish style in which Veszprém is playing. The team is great, the defence is very strong and they are obviously doing a great job since they have ended up in a better place in the Champions League year by year. I like the way the team is built and I can’t wait to help them as much as possible.
What do a team really need for a CL victory?
You have to have two similarly strong players in each position and of course you have to prepare for every team because you never know which one you’re going to play with in the final. You also have to be prepared mentally because the team plays two extremely hard games within two days and has to gain at least one goal more than the other squad. Furthermore, discipline is also important.
What do you expect from yourself in the next season?
My main goal is to gain trophies with my new team and I want to do everything to help Veszprém to be even more successful. If we will be able to end the season with new titles, I’d be happy.
Do you regard yourself as a playmaker or a shooter?
I do not really care about this. I was a playmaker in Kiel, while in my national team I was rather a hooter. Situations make me form the play and also I play according to the expectations of the coach. As middle back, you really have to be a playmaker and observe the game and the others and sometimes you have to step up and score.
How would you describe yourself? What does Aron Pálmarsson look like on the court and off the court?
On the court I’m not selfish at all, I don’t care whether I score ten goals or only one; all I care about is the victory. I do everything for the victory, I hate to lose. In private life I’m an easy-going and relaxed guy. There is no stress around me. I like being at home, chilling and playing with video games. Nothing special.
How did you spend your vacation?
I spent the summer break in Iceland because I had many things to do before moving here. I was happy to spend much time with my family and friends.
What would say to Veszprém fans?
Every time I played here I was impressed by the fans, though I played in the opponent team. I’ve always thought how amazing it would be if I were supported by these great fans. I hope they will support us in the whole season.
