We have interviewed Marko Kopljar, the new member of Telekom Veszprém’s team. The Croatian right back prepares for the Olympics, which will be held in Rio, with his team but fortunately we could catch him before lunch-time in order to speak with him.
Marko, first of all we would like to welcome you as the member of Telekom Veszprém’s team. How are you, how are your days going?
Thank you, I would like to also welcome everyone. I feel really good, however my days are crowded and I am a bit tired because we are training for the Olympics but weariness is completely normal in this case. Of course I am also really happy and I am glad that I signed to Veszprém. However, it is true that I did not have the time to visit Veszprém and to move in but I have been there many times before. I know what to expect and I cannot wait to play in the Arena which has maybe the best atmosphere in Europe.
Let’s take a look back on the previous season. How was it in Barcelona?
It could have been better both in my and my team’s case. We were not lucky, we had injuries but I would like to leave everything behind me, close the past and focus on the future. I try to do my best and focus on the Olympic Games. After this, when I arrive in Veszprém I will focus on my new team’s goals. I know that we will have a lot of matches and I also know that a lot of players will make up the team so I hope that we will be powerful enough to reach our goals.
Why did you choose Veszprém?
Veszprém is one of Europe’s best teams, which managed to get into the CL Final4 in the last three years but it represented the highest standards in the previous years also. The team is getting more powerful from year to year and they always achieve great results. During the next year I would like to help them win the CL trophy. I also know that the Hungarian championship is also better and better now and more teams are getting more powerful. What is more there is the SEHA League, which is also an excellent tournament and it always evolves. I am very motivated. I want to improve and do my best because of the team. The squad is made up of a lot of Croatian and Balkan players; the atmosphere is fantastic in the arena so I think that I will not have problems with fitting in.
Have you asked the Croatian players’ opinion before your decision?
It happened very quickly so I have not spoken them about it before. However we are always in contact, we meet and speak a lot about each other’s teams. We tell each other how the life in the team on the court and outside it is. A number of them are in Veszprém for a long time and they told me only good things about the Club and the city. This made my decision easier.
Talk about yourself, about your personality a bit, please!
Maybe you should ask someone else! (He laughs) I consider myself a good team player who subordinates everything to the team. I like to play both in defense and in attack. I always think about victory and it means extraordinary joy for me when my team wins. Nothing else matters. Veszprém has a lot of excellent players who perform at high level all the time and want to win together. These guys want to win trophies together from year to year and so am I.
Are you coming to Veszprém alone or with your family?
I will come with my family; with my wife and with my 8 months-old son. Moreover we have a dog that wakes us up in the mornings (he laughs). I am from a small town, Pozega which has around 22.000 inhabitants and is near to South Hungary. When I was young we came a lot to Hungary so I know well the Hungarian culture and cuisine which is similar to ours. I lived in big cities in the previous years but I like the calm, suburban life maybe because of my origins. I am sure that I will feel good in Veszprém not only because of handball.
As a kind of closure of our conversation what would you say to the fans?
I would say that I hope they will visit our matches and support us but it is unnecessary to say because I am sure it will be like this. So I only ask them to encourage the team as they always did. Go for it Veszprém!
