The second game was held in March and although this game was closer than the one in October, we lost by two goals. Ilic and Manaskov scored five times each, while from Szeged, Mario Sostaric scored six times. The third meeting was the final of the Hungarian Cup in Debrecen. Here, we only played well for a half, and stood up from a seven goals half time deficit, but eventually lost the cup by one goal. In the “Építők”, László Nagy scored seven times, while on the other side Jorge Maqueda scored seven times as well.
Szeged finished the Hungarian championship with an almost perfect record. They only lost one point, with a draw against Tatabánya. The top scorer of the season in the championship was Stefan Sigurmannsson with 103 goals, out of which he scored 56 from penalty.
Our next opponent said goodbye to the Champions League in the quarter final, after HC Vardar knocked them out. Skopje won the first game at home with eight goals and Szeged could not work down the disadvantage at home. Stefan Sigurmannsson lead his team in scoring in this competition with 63 goals.
Telekom Veszprém finished second in the Hungarian league’s regular season with 23 victories and three losses. Besides the two losses against Szeged, once Tatabánya could beat us. The top scorer of the season from “Építők” was Manuel Strlek with 95 goals.
Veszprém finished second in Group A in the Champions League and knocked out Sporting CP, then SG Flensburg-Handewitt to secure a place in the VELUX EHF FINAL4.
The rivalry between these two teams is up for a long time now. Nothing states it better than the statistics about the encounters in the championship finals. According to this, Veszprém and Szeged played 36 games against each other, only in the final, out of which Veszprém won 26 times and Szeged won 10 times.
