Telekom Veszprém will host MOL-Pick Szeged in the season’s first Hungarian derby on Sunday at 5:45 p.m. in the K&H League. The game will be broadcasted by M4 Sport from 7:20 p.m.
Last year we have met Szeged five times, out of which we managed to win three time, while Szeged got two wins. Out of our victories, probably the most important was the Hungarian Cup final that we could win against Szeged, but unfortunately, our last encounter was a sad one. Regardless of a win, we still lost the race for the Hungarian championship title. The last game ended 29:26 for Veszprém and our top scorer was Kent Robin Tonnesen with five goals.
It meant that Szeged could get to the top of the K&H League after eleven years. The team of Juan Carlos Pastor had a shaky November-December but still managed to win the league. They are unbeaten this season and have a three points lead against Tatabánya in the standings. Last time they happened to play against Tatabánya at home and won 34:27. Their top scorer this year is Richárd Bodó with 28 goals.
Their stop at last year’s Champions League run was in the best 16, where they faced the German THW Kiel. They lost by seven goals in Germany which was a bit too much of a disadvantage for them to erase. Last season they had some surprising result like winning against Barcelona, Löwen and even snatched a point at home against Vardar. They are unbeaten yet in their group this season after beating Zagreb, Nantes, Motor Zaporozhye, Celje and Flensburg. Besides them the only team that could win every game so far was PSG. The most efficient player in the CL in Mario Sostaric with 20 goals.
This summer they had a bigger renovation for the team as six players have been signed while eight has departed. They signed Mirko Alilovic from Veszprém, Stanislav Kasparek from Balatonfüred, Nik Henigman from Riko Ribnica, Joan Canellas and Jorge Maqueda from Vardar and Dean Bombac from Kielce. Sergei Gorbok and Stas Skube went to Vardar, Szabolcs Zubai plays in Orosháza now, Thiagus Petrus left to Barcelona, Ivan Srsen signed with Zagreb, José Manuel Sierra went to Saran, Márk Hegedüs signed with Eger and Bálint Fekete was loaned out to La Rioja.
The “Építők” played on Wednesday, after a great away win in the Champions League in Montpellier, against Tatabánya and to much surprise came home with a loss. The Supporters chased their team into victory against a Veszprém that made many mistakes in attack. Our top scorer in that game was Borut Mackovsek with five goals.
It is going to be very important to get the win in the domestic league and of course we have a lot of reasons to get revenge on Szeged as well. For this, the boys will need the one of a kind help that only our Supporters can give. Let’s chase our team into victory!
Let’s go Veszprém!
