Telekom Veszprém will host MOL-Pick Szeged, in the second-leg of the K&H League championship final on Sunday, at 3:00 p.m. in the Veszprém Arena. The game will be broadcasted by M4 Sport from 2:35 p.m.
A four goals deficit is ahead of Veszprém in the championship final, whose performance was not as good as it used to be. Szeged dominated the game from the first minute, and had a 3:0 lead after only 3 minutes. Momir Ilic scored the first Veszprém goal, in the fifth minute. The reds needed at least 10 minutes to get into the game, when Dragan Gajic and Renato Sulic scored two goals respectively and made the standing 6:5. After this, the two sides were head to head and until almost the end of the first half, the difference was only one goal. One and a half minutes before the first period Gajic got a two-minute suspension and Szeged lived with their chance by scoring two quick goals, putting their lead to three goals for the intermission.
In the second half, Veszprém played with a lot of technical mistakes, especially turnovers and missed chances backfired, as the opponent scored a lot of easy goals and managed to get a 6 goals lead until the 58th minute, 31:25. In the last two minutes Gajic, Blagotinsek and Manaskov scored, in contrary of the one penalty of Stefan Sigurmannsson, hence creating the final result of 32:28. Dejan Manaskov played well in this game, scored six goals, and caused a lot of inconvenience for the defense of Szeged with him, being mischievous. From Szeged, Stefan Sigurmannsson was the top scorer with six goals, 2 being from the seven-meter line.
Here is a little look-back to the history of the Hungarian championship. On the graph below, you can see how many teams could get to the podium since 1951.
As it is clear above, Veszprém is still dominant, after us comes Budapest Honvéd, with 14 gold medals. Szeged could only win two championships and bagged 17 silver medals, more than any other team in this competition ever.
We won our first championship title in 1985, by winning 20 games out of 26, and clinching 2 draws while losing 4 times. We collected 42 points and had a lead of 6 points in front of Szegedi Volán SC. Here is the final standings of the league in 1985 and our roster at that time.
Interesting fact, that even though we won 25 titles, we only gave the top scorer of the league twice. In season 1997-98 József Éles was the top scorer, while in the season 2011-12, Marko Vujin was the most efficient in the league. Here are every top scorers of the Hungarian championship ever.
Now, back to the present and let’s see what results does Telekom Veszprém need to be a champion again:
- Veszprém wins by 5 goals.
- Szeged scores less than 28 goals, and Veszprém wins with at least 4 goals.
- The result will be 32:28 for Veszprém, in which case comes the penalty shoot-out and Veszprém can win that.
Those who paid good attention to our players giving statements can see, that the boys are determined and does not consider turning the result around as a huge deal. For this, they will need an atmosphere like never before. Everyone should come in red and cheer for the team because we can only turn this bad situation to a celebration together.
Let’s go Veszprém!
