On Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Telekom Veszprém faces Paris Saint-Germain in the VELUX EHF Champions League for the second time in a week, but now on home court in Veszprém. The game starts at 5:30 p.m. but Sport 1 broadcasts live from 5 p.m.
We have a lot to get back at PSG because as of Sunday we lost our 4th consecutive game against the French powerhouse. Our last defeat was last week when we had a weak first half in defense compared to the way we are used to defend. Coach Ljubomir Vranjes confirmed that in his pregame interview: “We had a really bad 20 minutes in defense on Sunday.” That is how it could happen, that by the 15 minute mark Paris could get a 5 goals lead that made our head coach call his first time out early in the game. After the time out the team started to play better and tried to get closer to the opponent and we climbed back to just a 2 goals deficit. After this we have fallen back and the 5 goals difference came back for the half time. In the second period, we played as we are used to and we started to climb back goal by goal. For a longer period of time the answer to a goal was another goal from Paris but around the 45 minutes mark we work our deficit down and got to a 1 goal difference by Tönnesen. Even so, we had the chance to equalize, but our attack was finished with a goalpost and Mikkel Hanssen scored from the counter attack. A minute later, the young Kempf scored a goal, which set the 3 goals difference again. At the 53rd minute tension arise when Sander Sagosen elbowed Momir Ilic in the neck. The group scene was stopped but in that same attack both Sagosen and Ilic were sent off with a 2 minutes suspension. At the end, no matter how hard we tried, we could not get any closer and PSG won 33:28.
Paris played during the week, unlike us, and could prepare for the clash with a game against Cesson. Their opponent is currently on relegation spot and remained there after PSG won at home 32:25. With this victory Paris is the 2nd in the championship with Montpellier leading. Their top scorer in the Lidl Starligue is Uwe Gensheimer with 58 goals.
The “Építők” did not play this week, which gave them time to prepare well for our next opponent. The boys worked hard during the week and as it turns out from the pregame statements they rely on the home crowd to have a chance to win on Saturday. Dragan Gajic said: “I hope they can give them as crazy atmosphere as they did in Paris for us last week and that we can put more pressure on them by our supporters.” Well, the task is given. Put the opponent under pressure and get back the first spot in Group B in the Champions League.
Let’s go Veszprém!
