Telekom Veszprém will host German side THW Kiel in Match of the Week in the VEUX EHF Champions League on Saturday at 17:30. The game will be broadcasted live by Sport 1.
The two parties are preparing for their 19th clash in the European Cup series. So far, Veszprém won ten times, while Kiel won eight times. Interesting fact, that both teams scored the same amount of goals against each other, that is 496. The last time we met them was in the 2017/18 season, when we were in the same Group B. On home court, we managed to beat them 26:24, thank to Momir Ilic’s six goals. In away in the Sparkassen Arena, we lost in a close game 22:20. Ilic was the top scorer of this one as well, this time with five goals.
Kiel is returning to the Champions League after missing one year, as they have been dominating the EHF Cup last year. They claimed the second biggest European club trophy with a flawless 10 out of 10 victories. In the group, they beat Danish GOG, Spanish Granollers and Polish Azoty-Pulawy back-to-back. As the host of the Final4, they automatically qualified for the best four after the group phase, where they beat TTH Holstebro, and went on to the final. There they played a domestic final against Füchse Berlin and won 26:22, winning the EHF Cup.
This CL season they are through one round, where they hosted Polish side Kielce, on Match of the Week as well. The final result was a 30:30, with a last minute equalizer by Dujshebaev. The top scorer of Kiel was the Austrian Nikola Bylik, who scored seven times.
Our next opponent missed the Bundesliga title by two points last season. They won 31 games out of 34 and lost only three times. This season they are on fourth position with four victories and one loss. So far, they beat Göppingen, Ludwigshafen and the arch rival Flensburg, while yesterday, they beat Bergischer in away. Their only loss is against last year’s bronze medalist Magdeburg.
There was not much of a movement over the summer at Kiel, as only three players left, and three came to their places. Dario Quenstedt came from Magdeburg, Pavel Horak signed from Brest and Fynn Malte Schröder left Altenholz for the “Zebras”. Meanwhile, Andreas Wolff left to Kielce, Marko Vujin signed with Sporting and Sebastian Firnhaber joined Erlangen.
Telekom Veszprém played in the Hungarian league last time, in away, against Orosháza. After a closer fight than expected, the “Építők” won 25:30. In the Champions League, the team took a commanding start when they won against the Ukrainian champions Motor Zaporozhye 40:28 in the Veszprém Arena last weekend.
Let’s go Veszprém!
