After the draw of last Saturday in Poland, the team of Veszprém is playing on home court in the Champions League. Our opponent team is Flensburg Handewitt which won the tournament in 2014 and confidently started this CL season this year; they gained a 7-goal victory over Paris. The first home game in CL has always been eagerly awaited by the fans of Veszprém. Both the fans and the players are preparing for the clash which starts at 5:30 PM, this Saturday.
Live broadcast on Sport1.
The team of Veszprém has played against Flensburg in the European Cups four times so far. The German team is amongst the few teams with which we have negative record: one victory, three defeats and a 100:113 score rate.
05.10.2008.: MKB Veszprém KC - SG Flensburg-Handewitt, Champions League group game: 29:28 (14:14)
16.11.2008.: SG Flensburg-Handewitt - MKB Veszprém KC, Champions League group game: 32:29 (15:15)
According to our team’s coach Javier Sabaté and the players, the team is facing a difficult game against a great team which has improved a lot during summer. Their fast breaks are said to be their greatest strength, thus we have to develop a precise offence system.
Four players left and four players signed for the team of Coach Ljubomir Vranjes after the end of the previous season. The departed players are: Jakob Macke (ASV Hamm-Westfalen), Ahmed Elahmar (El-Zamalek), Lars Kaufmann (Frisch Auf! Göppingen) and Drasko Nenadic (HSV Handball). The new players are: Kentin Mahe from HSV Hamburgból (playmaker), Henrik Toft Hansen (pivot player), Petar Djordjic (left back) – as well as Rasmus Lauge Schmidt from THW Kiel (playmaker).
As we mentioned, the German team had a confident start in CL. In Bundesliga, however, they are in the 6th place after the 7th round; having four victories, one draw and two defeats. Two days ago, they ended up with a draw against Füchse Berlin (30:30).
On their official website, Coach Vranjes (who is fond of photography and just started writing his autobiography) said that scoring should not be taken for granted nowadays. He thinks that Veszprém is a strong, stable and unified team. Captain Tobias Karlsson finds the Hungarian squad better than the team of Paris. He added that Veszprém has long bench and performed great in the endgames of the last season.
We hope that Veszpém will be able to succeed and start the Champions League with a victory in front of fans.
