2018. May. 11. Friday, 08:33
On Saturday at 1:00 p.m., MOL-Pick Szeged will host Telekom Veszprém in the first-leg of the K&H League final. The game will be broadcasted by M4 Sport from 12:30 p.m.
Veszprém and Szeged have been dominating the domestic league for almost 10 years now, and it has not changed for this season either. Szeged, with the exception of a little bump in the road, got to the second place of the regular season, while Veszprém only suffered one defeat, and it happened to be from the Blues. The two big names faced each other 3 times this season, from which Veszprém won twice and Szeged won once. The first encounter happened in October, in Szeged, and we managed to clinch a huge victory of 9 goals, 21:30. The top scorer of the team was Kent Robin Tonnesen with 7 goals. The second time we met was in Veszprém, in March, where Szeged could get their revenge and after a very close game, they won by 1 goal, 32:31. Máté Lékai scored 6 goals on that game. The third time was in Debrecen in the Hungarian Cup final, in April. There, Szeged dominated the first half, but in the second period Veszprém came back with the help of Mirko Alilovic, and won the trophy for the 27th time. The final result was 23:21, and Máté Lékai was the top scorer again with 6 goals.
As it has already been mentioned, Szeged finished on the second spot in the regular season, with 22 victories, 2 draws and 2 defeats in 26 games. Their defeats came from Veszprém and Tatabánya, while their draws happened against Budakalász and Gyöngyös. They collected 46 points, with which they trailed Veszprém by 4 points in the run for the first spot of the regular season. Their top scorer in the league was Stefan Sigurmannsson with 134 goals, followed by Richárd Bodó with 103 goals.
In the Champions League Szeged was eliminated in the best 16. They played 14 games in the group phase, and won 6 times, lost 7 times and drawn once. Out of the victories, two stand out, their home victory over Barcelona and their away win in Löwen. Their draw happened against Vardar Skopje, which is also a great result. They finished fifth in the group and met THW Kiel in the best 16. After a 7 goals win for Kiel in Germany, Kiel lost in Szeged by one goal, but it did not matter as they have dropped Szeged out of the competition. The top scorer of Szeged in the European cup series was Zsolt Balogh, with 57 goals.
The “Építők” played in the Veszprém Arena last time, when they hosted Grundfos Tatabánya in the last round of the regular season of the K&H League. Our team started a bit slow, and our guests were leading going into the second half, but after that, Veszprém came back and turned the game in their favors. The game ended in a 28:25 victory for Veszprém. The two top scorers in that game were Petar Nenadic and Momir Ilic, who both scored 5 goals each.
Ever since the end of Sunday's game, Telekom Veszprém has been working hard to secure another championship title from their arch opponent, which would be trophy number 26 for Veszprém. The boys will be accompanied by 320 “Építők” supperters in Szeged, to help get the best possible result in the first game of the championship final.
Let’s go Veszprém!
