MOL-Pick Szeged hosts Telekom Veszprém in the K&H League on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. M4 Sport will broadcast the game from 1:00 p.m.
Another year, another derby between the two top teams of Hungary. Last season the two teams faced each other 5 times, from which 3 was won by Veszprém. The first encounter was won by Szeged at their home with a result of 26:23. Veszprém on home court managed to won the second leg 24:22, which meant that Szeged won the regular season of the championship. Then came the Final4 of the Hungarian Cup where we met them in the final and won by a penalty out of time to finish 23:22. Lastly, the championship was decided in two games. We started at home court and won by 6 goals, while losing by 3 there. This meant that we celebrated our championship title in Szeged again.
The blues are undefeated in the Hungarian championship and leads the table by 2 point but played a game more than Veszprém. They played seven matches so far and defeated Cegléd, Eger, Tatabánya, Orosháza, Csurgó, Vác and FTC in the respective order. Their top scorer is Stefan Sigurmansson who scored 30 goals until this point.
Our opponent of Saturday was knocked out of the Champions League last season from the best8 teams of the competition. They faced French giants PSG and made them fight hard for that sport in the Final4. Their top scorer last year was Zsolt Balogh who scored 88 goals. This year Szeged won their games that they should have won. They were victorious in 3 games out of 5, while losing once against Nantes and achieving a draw against Vardar Skopje at home court. The 3 winning games were against Zagreb, Kristianstad and Plock. This puts them to the 3rd place in their group. Top scorer so far is Zsolt Balogh with 21 goals while behind him with 16 comes Denis Buntic.
For the new season, Szeged signed two new players. Dmitry Zhitnikov came from Wisla Plock and Stefan Sigurmansson came from Aalborg. Uhr Kastelic and Sandro Obranovic were called back from loan to their original clubs while Bendegúz Bóka departed to Balatonfüred.
The last time “Építők” stepped on court was in the Champions League in Kielce where they snatched an important point at the end game thanks to Gasper Marguc’s goal close to the final horn. The last time they played in the Hungarian championship was 10 October when Veszprém won against FTC by 19 goals. The team is still unbeaten this season and it would be sweet to keep this streak going against one of our biggest rivals.
Let’s go Veszprém!
