Rhein-Neckar Löwen hosts Telekom Veszprém in the VELUX EHF Champions League on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcasted live on Sport1.
The two partied are through a first game in Group A in the Champions League, as they have faced each other in the beginning of this month. It was David Davis’ first home CL game and seemed like he can win it right away, as we were up by two goals in the 21st minute of the game. After that, Löwen turned the game around and went to the dressing room at half time with a 12:15 lead. A whole new Veszprém came out for the second period and scored five goals in a row which brought them back to a two goals lead. Unfortunately, this momentum was not enough for the whole match and Löwen took matters into its own hand at the 55th minute of the game and took the two points from Veszprém Arena. The result was 28:29 for the Germans, but despite the loss, the team showed signs of improvement, which means that we are not underdogs in Mannheim. Our home game’s top scorer was Kentin Mahé with five goals.
Löwen played back-to-back with Montpellier in the turning of the rounds after their adventure in Veszprém. First, they won by ten goals against the French, then a week later, they suffered a five goals defeat from the titleholders, 31:26. Löwen is currently at third position in the group with five wins and three losses, collecting ten points. Their top scorer in the CL is Andy Schmidt with 42 goals.
The “Lions” are currently on fourth position in the Bundesliga. They have nine victories, a draw and two losses. They played against Flensburg the last time, yesterday to be exact, and got into a bigger defeat. The Bundesliga titleholders did not give a chance to Löwen and won 27:20, securing their top position on the table. Top scorer of Löwen in the German championship is Jannik Kohlbacher with 61 goals.
The “Építők” played in the Champions League last weekend, when they hosted IFK Kristianstad in the Veszprém Arena. The home team had the game in their hands the whole time and won confidently by nine goals. Our top scorer was Kent Robin Tonnesen with eight goals. The last time we played in the K&H League was against Komló a week ago, and Veszprém won with a huge margin, 40:20.
The boys will be supported by 82 Veszprém Fans, to whom we thank the support. There was not much time to prepare for Wednesday’s game, but the memory of the weekend victory may live vividly in the mind of the players, who would like to continue this momentum and make the most our of it. Let’s hope they can bring two points home from Germany.
Let’s go Veszprém!
