This weekend MVM Veszprém is facing Bomba! Men’s Handball Hungarian Cup Final Four held on April 16-17, in Debrecen. The title defender team is playing the semi-final against Balatonfüredi KSE at 2 pm and the aim is to get to the final the following day (4 pm) and win the Cup again. The games, except for the bronze game, will be broadcast live by M4.
In the history of Veszprém handball team began in 1977, the Hungarian Cup was the first trophy that the team gained. Years of our Hungarian Cup victories: 1984, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. As you can see, Veszprém has been the winner of the Cup since 2009.
Winning the Cup for the 8th times in a row requires winning the semi-final against Balatonfüred KSE on Saturday. We have played against the team of István Csoknyai in the Hungarian Championship play-off this season and we gained a confident 9-goal victory (24:33). However, Coach Xavi Sabaté pointed out in his statement that anything can happen during the tournament and the young squad of Balatonfüred can be dangerous even for Veszprém. Two hours earlier MOL-Pick Szeged will play against Mezőkövesdi KC for the final qualification.
We have played 62 Hungarian Cup semi-finals so far and we have succeeded for 52 times, we have ended 2 games with a draw, 7 games with a defeat and there was a match which discontinued. We have never played against Balatonfüred for Cup victory.
Veszprém has played 3 semi-finals in Debrecen so far and ended all of them with a victory but we have ended a final game with a loss. Our Hungarian Cup final results are as follows: 32 victories, 3 draws and 17 defeats. During the one-match Cup finals we have gained 15 victories out of 19 matches. Veszprém has played 20 final games against Szeged and we have succeeded 14 times so far.
MVM Veszprém has been preparing for the match confidently because about 2 weeks ago the team gained its first significant trophy of this season; the team won the SEHA League Final4 held in Varazdin and defended its title in the South East-European tournament.
On Friday the players were training in Veszprém, then traveled to Debrecen. On Sunday they are going to travel back to Veszprém right after the game and we hope they will bring their 25th Hungarian Cup trophy with them.
