SG Flensburg-Handewitt will host Telekom Veszprém on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the quarterfinal of the VELUX EHF Champions League. The game will be broadcasted live by Sport 1.
Veszprém won five time, while Flensburg won three times besides two draws in the history of the two teams. Last year we met them in the Group phase of the Champions League, first, in the Veszprém Arena. In a very close game Veszprém managed to win 28:27, to which Máté Lékai contributed with nine goals and László Nagy with eight. The second leg in Germany brought an even closer game where the parties had to share the points with a 31:31 draw. In away, our two right wings, Dragan Gajic and Gasper Marguc were the top scorers with five goals each, while from the opponent Holger Glandorf scored five times also, and saved a point for Flensburg with a last minute goal.
Flensburg finished this Group phase in Group B on third position after PSG and Szeged. They won seven times and lost six times while playing a draw in the last round out of 14 group games. In the best 16 they played against Meshkov Brest, whom they knocked out with a double victory scoring 30 goals at each games. The top scorer of our opponent in the CL in Rasmus Lauge Schmidt with 61 goals.
Flensburg will most likely defend their title in the Bundesliga as they are still in the lead and only Magdeburg could beat them so far, only with one goal. Only Kiel has a better goal difference then Flensburg’s +154. They played a clash last weekend against Rhein-Neckar Löwen in away, and won 23:26. Rasmus Lauge Schmidt is not only efficient in the Champions League but in the Bundesliga as well. He scored 105 goals so far in the domestic league for Flensburg.
Telekom Veszprém played two games last week in the Hungarian league, both on home court. First they played against Tatabánya, then Mezőkövesd. “Építők” managed to win both games, so the rehearsal for Flensburg seems to be good. The team did not stop preparing during the Easter holidays and will travel to Germany with confidence, where more than 50 Veszprém Fans will cheer to them. The stakes are high at this point of the season and the boys are clear about that. They will do anything in their power to achieve a result that can help them secure the fifth Final4 qualification in six years.
Let’s go Veszprém!
