Meshkov Brest hosts Telekom Veszprém this Saturday in the 3rd round of VELUX EHF Champions League. The game starts at 4 p.m. but Sport 1 will broadcast live from 3:30 p.m.
We know Brest well after 3 years of SEHA League but we have never met in any of the European Cup series. The last time we played against them was in the semi final of the South-East Handball League in the Final4 and won 33:31 after a penalty shootout. In that match Ilic scored 7, Gajic scored 5 and Sulic scored 4 goals.
In last year’s Champions League Meshkov went on from the group with 5 victories, 4 draws and 5 defeats. In the best 16 they faced Flensburg and gave a hard time for the Germans who won their home game by 2 goals and the away game also by 1 goal. Their top scorers in the series were Rastko Stojkovic with 81, Dainis Kristopans with 76 and Iman Jamali with 45 goals.
In their previous SEHA League season they managed to qualify for the Final4 but they failed to go on to the final because of the previously mentioned penalty shootout against us. In the bronze game they beat Zagreb and secured the 3rd place in the league.
Our opponent of Saturday lost almost all of its bombers over the summer. Dainis Kristopans left to Vardar Skopje and Iman Jamali returned to Veszprém from loan. Besides them left Vladislav Ostroushko to Schaffhausen who scored 45 goals in the CL and Pavel Atman went to Hannover. Last year he scored 26 goal in the European Cup series. Other than them Alexander Tiumentsev signed to Bucharest and Maxim Babichev went to Motor Zaporozhye. Meshkov strengthened with Petar Djordjic from Flensburg, Vid Poteko from Celje, Konstantin Igropulo from Kolding, Aleh Astrashapkin from Csurgó, Artiom Selviasuk from Mezőkövesd, Ivan Matskevich from Bucharest, Alexander Skhurinskiy from Krasnodar and Pavel Horak from Erlangen.
On their last Champions League game, the “Építők” won against Flensburg in a nail-biter with only one goal. Before that they played in Celje and won 31:39. In the K&H League they are still unbeaten after winning against Vác 18:36 on Tuesday.
Let’s go Veszprém!
