As we have already informed you, the Veszprém Handball Club terminated the contract with Antonio Carlos Ortega, which means he is leaving MVM Veszprém. The head coach position will be temporarily replaced by the former assistant coach, Javier Sabaté.
Antonio Carlos Ortega had a truly successful career as a handball player; he won the Champions League as a right wing of Barcelona for six times, and he became an Olympic bronze medallist in 2000 as a member of the Spanish national team.
He started his coach career in 2005 at Antequera, right after he had finished his player career. He became the coach of team of Veszprém in July of 2012, helping the team get better year by year, achieve great results in the Champions League, and gain all possible trophies in Hungary: 3-3 Championship titles, Cup victories and two Super Cup triumphs.
In 2013, the team was not able to get into the Final Four of CL because THW Kiel defeated us among the best 8 teams. One year later, however, we managed to qualify by defeating Paris Saint-Germain and our big dream came true, that is we could play in the most prestigious handball tournament in Cologne where we ended up in the 4th place.
In the 2014/15 season, we moved forward again (according to Ortega’s well-known “step by step method”) and won an unforgettable semi-final of the CL against Kiel. Unfortunately, a day later, we were not able to make our biggest dream come true since we were defeated by the team of Barcelona.
In the previous season, Champions League was not the only international tournament that we participated in, because we played in the SEHA League as well, and we ended up winning in the Final Four in the Veszprém Arena and gaining a new trophy.
Antonio Carlos Ortega spent three seasons on the bench of Veszprém. During this time, we got to know his great personality. He always prepared profoundly for every single game and did everything for the team to perform the best.
Hereby, we would like to thank him for the hard work and all experiences that he contributed to our team in the last three seasons. We wish him good luck for his further career.
