Telekom Veszprém suffered some unexpected defeats in the beginning of the 2018/19 season, which is starting to find its rhythm after the head coach change and is playing better, achieving great victories. We talked about this fall season with our captain, László Nagy.
We have suffered hurting defeats in the fall part of the season but until the end of the year we could collect important victories and the game of the team looks better. How satisfied can we be with our position in the group, and how hopeful can we be about our latest game for the future?
We cannot go through the unsuccessful period that easy either. Answering the second part of the question, yes, the last few rounds in the Champions League was starting to resemble the old ourselves, both in offense and defense, and also in the net, in every element of the game. Regardless of these, we would like to get an even better performance from ourselves. I always said that the fall part of the season is rather about surviving and one can say that we barely survived this one. Our Fans were dissatisfied of course, but the best feeling was when later they were celebrating with us after a winning game. This is the atmosphere that can push us through hard times. We are absolutely hopeful about spring.
David Davis has been nominated as head coach of the Club in October. What new impulses did he bring which helped the team step on the path of victory?
It was an old-new impulse, as the Spanish system was familiar for most of the players. The only question was how long it takes to get together and get tight. Of course, it is a huge test for him as well, because he did not get the team in the best shape, not only physically but mentally either. It is always hard to get the thoughts of a player together after a series of losses or worse performances. Davis is here, and we spend a lot of time training and analyzing videos. His work is starting to show on the team as it was visible on the last few Champions League rounds.
In which segments of the game did we make a huge step forward, and what are the ones that are still needed to be worked on?
We have improved in defense paired with goalkeeper performance. I am very happy about this coming back. We have to improve our one man plus offense. I feel like we were inaccurate and a few of these chances can decide the outcome of a match. I expect an improvement in this element of the game.
How do you see the integration of the newcomers of this summer?
Everyone is trying to live up to the expectations and the level of Veszprém. There is no problem with anyone. Toft Hansen was suffering from injuries and had less playing time but I can feel next to him in the defense that he is reliable and tough. I hope that he will soon regain his best form and be very useful for us in the remaining of the season. Everyone grew up to this task.
Looking back on 2018, what were the most memorable moments for you?
There were not much unfortunately in this year, but you can only understand the value of a Hungarian Cup when you lose the Hungarian championship and get knocked out of the Champions League way too early. So I would say the Hungarian Cup was a memorable one. I would say the successful World championship qualifiers against Slovenia as well, from my side. Not to forget that not many teams can win in Mannheim against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen, so it goes to the most memorable ones as well.
Thank you for the interview and we wish you a Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
Thank you very much! Merry Christmas to all!
