Telekom Veszprém won the SEHA – Gazprom League trophy for the third time in their history on Sunday. We asked our head coach, David Davis about the aftermath of the first trophy this season.
How would you rate our weekend in Zadar?
This is what we wanted when we started the preparation. We wanted the players to be in perfect shape to fight for the trophy. We did not reach results in the pre-season that we expected. I think we were more worried about the health of the players. The team played better and better from week to week, and we were ready for the SEHA League weekend. I am satisfied with the result we achieved in Zadar, and I feel like we were in top shape for over 90 minutes of the tournament.
The performance of the team is improving game by game, and you said that you want to see them do the things you practice on trainings. Did you get it back during the Final4?
Yes, I did. I am happy and not at all surprised, because this is what I was saying. László Nagy was watching the trainings also, and it was visible that the players were performing much better in practices. We were not worried, and when we saw the result of the Final4, we knew that this was supposed to happen. The training is fundamental, and you want to see that in a game. We wanted to show it and we could finally.
A lot of players were involved in this trophy, starting from our departing players and almost the entire youth academy. What would you say to them now, after we reached the very end of the competition?
It is really important! I have to say thanks to them. The young players, the team of Momir Ilic and Péter Gulyás helped us to fit the matches in our calendar, and played well, even won two games for us. They helped a lot, and they are part of the team. I have to say thank you to last year’s team, because we reached the first position together, and they are part of this success of course. We finished what we started last season. Once again, huge thanks to them, and they are part of the trophy.
To who do you dedicate this victory in the SEHA League Final4?
I dedicate this trophy to the people of the Club. To all the people working at the office really hard, and helping us, and me a lot. The situation nowadays is really complicated, inside and outside of the court as well. Secondly, I dedicate this victory to our Supporters, who are always with us, and travel to Zaporozhye even, just to see us play. I bet, if they were allowed to come to Zadar, they would have come. We continue playing, but they are not able to follow the matches like they used to. This trophy is for them. This victory goes out to the players and coaches, who were with us last year. To our players, who are doing a really good job day in-day out. They are the ones who do the job on the court. I am really proud of them. Of course, I cannot miss my family out of this, this is for them as well.
What are your plans for the upcoming weeks and months?
I think that we reached a high level of concentration and the rhythm of playing with confidence. We played better, and upped the level starting the first two Hungarian league game. In the next months, all the way to December we want to be in a good way, and to carry on playing with the same concentration. We will try to increase the level of the trainings and the games as well. We want to be in the highest position possible. We will have a tough opponent for first, Nantes in away. These first two points are really important, because they will be a tough opponent in the entire series, just like they showed it in the last seasons. I certainly hope that we will continue with the same determination and concentration.
