Goalkeeper of MKB-MVM Veszprém and the Hungarian national team, Mikler Roland was chosen as the best Hungarian male handball player and goalkeeper of the year in Hungarian Handball Association’s voting. We had an interview with “Roli” after this big acknowledgement.
Congratulation, Roli! What was your thought when you found out that you were chosen as the best Hungarian male handball player?
Thank you very much. I’m very happy, of course; it’s a huge honour to receive such an award. Although, I think that a goalkeeper could never achieve this without having such teammates whom I had the chance to play with. In the first part of 2014, I ended a nice period with great success and here a new period has begun, which works exactly as I planned. So this is a nice feeling.
Can we say that the previous year was the best one in your career?
I think it was. If we don’t think about the 4th place of the Olympic Games then 2014 was my most successful year – at least in the club level.
If you had to highlight someone in these categories – whether a player, or a goalkeeper – who would it be? With whom do you think you were in the biggest contest for these awards?
I’m sure that Laci Nagy was on the top in player’s category, and I would mention Nándi Fazekas and Peti Tatai as goalkeepers.
What are your advices for young people who take up handball after seeing your example?
My advice is that if they really want to become handball players in the future then endurance, humbleness and hard work will be transformed into success; sacrifices lead to results. They are not supposed to deal with the others playing in the playground when they have to go to trainings. I also had a period when I almost decided on giving up handball because sometimes parties and friends were in my mind. But thank God, my family directed me and I thank them for supporting me constantly.
By the way, gratitude. It is a huge acknowledgment that you won. To whom are you the most grateful?
I would highlight my family again and also my wife, whom I’ve been with for 6 years. I think without her I wouldn’t be here now; she makes my days easy. I would emphasise the role of Haris Porobic, whom I’ve been working with for 5 years. We really get on well with each other. He’s a professional; we do a great job together which has its result. Besides, I’d like to thank my instructor club, Dunaferr where I acquired the basics. I thank Szeged because I wouldn’t be in one of the best teams of the world if I hadn’t spent there those 4 years. And, of course, I am very thankful for being in Veszprém’s team and hope that successful years are coming. Finally, I’d like to add that I’m grateful to the Hungarian handball fans because wherever I played, they warmly welcomed and supported me.
